Ferrari 812 Competizione onboard video, Fiorano
A few laps of Fiorano on a chilly October morning testing the new Ferrari 812 Competizione, an even more hardcore version of the 812 Superfast. The 6.5-litre V12 is turned up to 819bhp and revs to 9500rpm (500rpm higher!) and features a new crank, pistons, con-rods, cams and intake, gear shifts are 5% faster, plus there’s new independent rear wheel steering so the rear wheels can turn independently of one another, rather than being linked together like a Superfast. Weight falls by a modest 38kg to 1487kg dry, while aerodynamic downforce increases by 80kg at 124mph, and you might notice the rear-view mirror is actually fed an image by a camera – the whole rear screen is replaced by a sheet of aluminium covered in vortex generators.
it’s a beautifully balanced car with bags of front end grip, great body control through direction changes and nice mix of inherent oversteer with good traction to lean on considering the power. Feels lighter than it is and purer and more agile than a rear-wheel drive, front-engined V12 has any right to on track. Rear-wheel steering feels natural, V12 slightly muted due to gasoline particulate filter but still sounds the business, goes like crazy and doesn’t stop pulling hard until that 9500rpm cut-off. Shame the brakes went soft during my laps.
In the video I’m following ace test driver Francesco Arati, who set a production car lap record at Indianapolis in the SF90 hybrid supercar of 1min 29.625sec. I’m on the Michelin Cup 2 R tyres, he’s on the Pirelli P Zero Corsas. Hope you enjoy riding onboard.
